The General

by John Finney
(Midway, Texas)

My bassett's name is General Elvis H. Wrinkle Pants. As I write this, he is now 8 weeks old. We live in a very small town in east Texas. My wife gave me General for a Christmas present. I have wanted another one for over 20 years now, She finally gave in.

General likes his squeaky toy squirell. On Christmas Eve my brother-in-law and kids came to the farm to hunt with us. My nephew killed his first deer. While I was cleaning it, General came out for his walk. He ran over to the deer head and started licking its mouth and then started chewing on one of the deers eyeballs, wagging his tail like crazy. He loves it. As we were processing the meat, he kept coming into the room wagging his tail.

Our family, loves General and we have multiple daily play times with him. We have figured out, if we play long and hard enough at night he sleeps great and doesn't wake us up but once to go outside to use the bathroom. When he does have an accident it is usually our fault for not noticing his signs. When he's done outside, he sits at your feet and looks up at you, ready for his praise and generous loving that he then receives.

The General has been a great addition to our family in the short time we have had him. We love him greatly and he is an awesome member to our farm. Look forward to sending more stories in the future.

This is Lieutenant General Wade hampton the 4th. He is named after the only confederate civil war officer to make the rank of Leiutenant General, Wade Hampton the 3rd. Wade Hampton was from our home town of Charleston, SC and went on to become the Governor of SC after the Civil war ended. I just wanted to say hello from Charle4ston and let you know that there is another General out there!

I also have a Basset with the name General, Lieutenant General Wade Hampton IV. He is named after the only confederate civil war general to make the rank of lieutenant general, Wade Hampton III. Wade Hampton was from Charleston, S.C., our home town. He went on to become the Governor of South Carolina. I have never met someone else with a basset with the same name. So hello from Charleston!

Wow...
by: Virginia from just-basset-hounds

Is that really true? I don't think I could stomach seeing my Basset Hound chomp on a deer's eyeball. But, I guess deer hunting and cleaning is just not for me. I remember when I was a kid we used to go fishing in Florida with my grandfather. He would clean and skin the fish that we caught. I didn't mind the fishing but I never participated in the rest. Anyway, thanks for your story and congrats on getting a Basset Hound. Love his name! Sounds like The General is doing well. Enjoy!
