On Christmas at 5 weeks and 5 days!

On Christmas at 5 weeks and 5 days!

We got our new puppy a few days before Christmas (2009). We are newlyweds and having been dieing for a puppy. We wanted to wait to find a Basset, I was so excited when I did. I was so nervous that something would happen as if it was too good to be true considering I found her on Craigslist. We love her to death and couldn't ever consider crate training her. I do not think crate training is a bad thing. My husband and I just don't have set schedules due to his job (not getting off at the same time everyday) and me being in class a couple times a week at night. I will say that we are having a hard time training her on the puppy pads. We just have to give it time I guess. At night she doesn't like to sleep a lot. She likes biting us (teething I guess). We have her plenty of toys, just haven't found the right one. I am hoping for the next week to pass fast so I can get her the shots she needs and take her to the vet for a checkup. Wish me luck!

Savannah - training
by: Angie

Hi there, don't be discouraged. I don't think that it will take 7 months to train your puppy. What we did/do everytime we get a puppy is take them out often for walks so that they can do their business. What we also do is take away their water and food from about an hour before bedtime and make sure that you take her out just before sleep time. Also, if you want her to sleep more at night, give her a heavier meal in the evenings and less in the morning. At her age she should be on about 4 meals a day...so instead of giving her the same amount of food at each meal; take a little away from the first morning meal and add it to the last meal of the day. puppies are like babies when they teethe. They need lots of chew toys. And don't give up. When she cries at night for attention when you want to sleep, ignore her and she will learn quickly that you mean business. That night time is quiet/sleep time. Be sure to give her lots of praise and positive re-inforcement when she does the right thing. When she does the wrong thing, just ignore her. If you shout or spank her when she is naughty, she will not learn the lesson. Hope this helps.

I am not giving up. I have been reading alot. I just need to bring a book home to my husband or go to a class for him to understand what I am reading. He was getting very discouraged last night. She is only 7 weeks old...he is going to hate it when he finds out that its going to take about 7 months to get this down. Pray for me!

Congratulations on your marriage and puppy! Don't give up on training - she's still really, really young. Thanks for sharing.
