Beautiful dog.
In the past I raised a few Basset Hounds and know the breed pretty well. After my child grew up, I divorced, and I was lonely and wanted a companion. Upon visiting many of the local shelters, I just didn't find a dog that "bonded" with me. You will know in a few minutes if a dog is right for you. Then I met Nutmeg. She had been adopted once and the owner brought her back to the shelter - although I'm not sure why. She is a gorgeous dog and very friendly. Her facial expressions are priceless! They have the most expressive face! I proceeded to adopt her and brought her home. We became fast friends. She follows me just about everywhere I go and watches me intently.
The first time I left her alone in the house I had to run to the store for milk. I was only gone for about 20-30 minutes. But when i walked in the door, she had gotten in the trash, pulled the flour sack off the table and there was flour everywhere! She looked up at me as if someone had come in and did this and she was perfectly innocent. It was so hard to stay mad at her for long. So, she taught me to keep the trash out of her reach and that she is tall enough to take things off the top of the counter! LOL!!
The best part is that she is so loving and wants to be near me at all times. She's a great listener and when I'm upset or worried, she seems to know that too. I don't know what I would do without her. Bassets are the greatest. They aren't hyper and don't need lots of exercise like a Lab or Blue Heeler. But she does enjoy our daily walks. I live in the country and there's always some trail to follow. Whether its rabbits, raccoons, or whatever. That nose is always at work!
I highly recommend the breed. Nutmeg and I are like peas and carrots. We just fit.
