I have a very cute basset that I got as a gift for my birthday. Her name is Muffin ! I have a lot of problems training her and don't know if I am doing it right. I would love for her to be a happy loving puppy. But unfortunately if I don't get her obedient, I must get rid of her. Please I don't want to give away my baby. Please help me on ways to get her trained to the best puppy she can be.

Thank You!
Odette

Don't give up...
by: Virginia from just-basset-hounds

Sorry to hear that you are having problems training your Basset Hound puppy. But, don't give up! It sounds like Muffin is still a young pup. It takes time and patience. But, with consistency Basset Hounds are trainable.

Are you house training her? I know it can be frustrating when a dog, no matter how cute, is peeing and pooping all over the house. So house training is a must. One key to minimizing the mess is to limit her to smaller areas of the house, i.e. don't let her roam all over the house without supervision. Otherwise you're likely to find unwanted surprises around the house. There are a lot of good tips in this article: House Training a Basset Hound

You'll need to teach her how to behave, i.e. jumping up and biting / nipping are all unacceptable. It is also good to teach her commands such as sit, stay, come. Socializing her to be comfortable around different people, pets, noises, and situations is a must too.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, then take her to a puppy training class such as puppy kindergarten and talk to the trainers about your concerns. If you have specific problems or questions, please feel free to post a comment and I'd be happy to respond.
