My Basset Shastabelle!

Shasta joined my family when she was a mere five weeks old. She is a wonderful gift from a friend, and was flown by Delta Airlines in a crate. All I saw was ears when I picked her up in cargo.

She's twelve years old now, and has been such a wonderful addition to our family. Her disposition has been nothing but sweet and loving. I have seven children and plenty of grandchildren, and Shasta has been great with every one of them.

Now that she is older though, she is having a tough time being around babies. She has tremors and sometimes even seizures. It happens when she is kenneled as well. It's something new, started about a year ago. I do everything I can to keep infants and toddlers from around her. I guess it's her age and I will respect that! She's earned it!

Her health issues have been minimal. She suffered from fatty cysts when she was younger, but she outgrew those. Now she has an auto immune dry eye disease, that warrants eye drops for the rest of her life. I think that's pretty good for a gal who is 84, how about you?

Don't play tug of war with your Basset. They are not that kind of a dog. They love to fetch but if you play tug of war with them, you will find dead animals in your backyard. They are a hunters breed and have an instinct to find and surround their prey, not destroy it. They are a very, docile breed and you want them to remain that way.

Shasta has been such a wonderful pet. She has never nipped or tried to bite anyone. Her favorite thing is to roll over and have her belly rubbed. Smart? VERY SMART!!! She understands EVERYTHING!
