Geting a Dog - What to do on the first night

This is one of my Bassets, maddie. It's also my screen saver.
My basset Sophie (we have parted ways). The first night we got her she smelled horrible so we gave her a bath and that freaked her out badly. For the first 2 months, I did not go to see her vet. Apparently she was dealing with severe separation anxiety because of being away from her past owner. We thought it was something serious. Luckily it was easily treatable. But because we freaked her out the first night, she didn't trust us well and it was hard to gain her trust back. Because we thought she was sick we had to pay a lot of money. So I recommend that you see your vet as soon as you get your Basset. It will make life a lot easier.
