Basset Hound Puppies

Two Key Questions to Ask Yourself Before Buying

Thinking about getting a Basset Hound puppy to be your pet? It's a big decision!

As you probably already know, caring for a puppy is a lot of responsibility. The kids may be hounding you to get one tomorrow and claiming that they will care for it. But, you know this is not a decision to be made in haste.

First, you need to do some research. But, WHERE does one start?

If you feel overwhelmed, follow these guidelines to make a few key decisions which will help on your quest to find the perfect dog...

Basset Hound Puppies are Adorable! But...

Slow down! Research the breed BEFORE buying. Here is the first question to consider:

Is this breed a good 'fit' for me and my family?

Give this question full consideration to understand what you are getting yourself into. Find out if you and your family are compatible with the Basset Hound breed. Determine if you are able to meet the needs of this type of dog.

Basset Hound Puppies are Soft, Cuddly, and Playful. A Bundle of Joy! But...

At times, the puppyhood phase of dog ownership can seem quite challenging. Puppies have lots of needs. They need to be loved, trained, and cared for. They also go through some undesireable phases which may include chewing, nipping, accidents in the house, separation anxiety, etc.

During the first year, a new owner spends a considerable amount of time working with and training his puppy. While some are ready for this challenge and actually enjoy performing all the necessary tasks of raising a puppy, others struggle to find the time and / or simply did not realize the demands.

Here's an alternative... consider getting an older Basset Hound. While adult dogs also need love and care, many have already been trained leaving more time to enjoy your dog's companionship without the demands of first year puppyhood.

Therefore, the second question to ponder is...

Do I really want raise a Basset Hound puppy or would an adult dog be a better match considering my lifestyle, needs, and wants? For help answering this question, read the following article:

Ready or Not!

Researching a dog breed can be time consuming. But, it can also be fun to discover the type(s) of dog with which you are compatible (Basset Hound or other). In the long run, research and self reflection are worth the effort as you are better able to make a choice about dog ownership that is right for you and your family.

Ready for a Basset Hound? If so, congratulations on your decision!
