Jun 13, Basset Hound Seeks Safe Haven

According to what I heard from neighbors, today was suppose to be the storm of the century in our area. Thunder storms, tornadoes, heavy rain, high winds! I had no idea.

Fortunately, dire predictions were incorrect and the severe weather did not materialize. But, we did get some heavy rain and thunder this morning.

My Basset Hound, Hunter, doesn't like thunder. He gets all upset and seeks a comforting spot in the house to ride it all out.

When the thunder started this morning, I heard him running around (nails clicking on the hardwood) trying to get to one of his safe havens. Unfortunately for him, he couldn't get to any of the places where he finds comfort:

- Playroom (under the table it's safe). Door closed.

- Master bedroom closet. Door closed.

- Standing shower in master bathroom. Darn, door closed again!

So where did I find him when I went looking?

I couldn't believe it. He jumped into the bathtub in the hallway bathroom! I didn't even know he was capable of getting in there.

Can't get in for a bath. But thunder, no problem!

---

I'd love to read your Basset Hound stories and I'm sure others would too. Click to learn how to share a story and photos.

Grace from Massachusetts recently adopted an abandoned Basset Hound, Watson, who was in bad shape when he was found. He had very bad ear infections and had to have bladder surgery to remove stones.

She recently provided an update that Watson is enjoying his new home. But, unfortunately his ear infections will be chronic as a culture revealed the bacteria is resistant to antibiotics.

Grace is wondering if anyone else has dealt with chronic Basset ear issues? Has anyone had success with the cider vingegar/rubbing alcohol concoction to clean with? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Please read Watson's story and the update from Grace in the comments section.

If you have any suggestions for her, please leave a comment.

Rudy came into Michigan Basset Rescue on Christmas Eve. His owners took him to the vet to be put down as he had been hit by a car. After settling into his foster home and seeing the vet for a follow up, it turns out Rudy needs surgery to save his leg.

The rescue is hoping to raise $2013 to cover the estimated surgery cost. Rudy is only ten months old and has a lot of life left.

Check out his photos (he's so adorable)...

He's had this bed for about six months. Got it as a gift from my brother-in-law. It's washable (the fleece covering), still cushy, and has held up well.

As everyone already knows, the legendary Dick Clark recently passed away. But, did you also know that he loved dogs? Apparently, he had many of his own and allowed them to roam around freely in his production offices. He also liked to feature dogs on his television shows. Here's a funny clip of a talking Basset Hound named Oscar from his show Friday Night Surprise in 1989.

Apr 17, Friendly Reminder: Don't Forget to Maintain Your Dog's Teeth

One of the best things you can do to maintain your dog's teeth throughout his life is to brush them. Yes... brush his teeth! I know, you may be thinking... Are you kidding me? I've never heard of that!

That's what I thought when my veterinarian told me about this many years ago when my Basset Hound, Hunter, was a young pup. She also would remind me every year when I took him in for his annual visit.

So... Did I listen to my vet's advice? No, because I figured Hunter would be
just fine.

And here's what happened:

As the years went on and my puppy grew into an adult dog, he began to have really, really bad breath. And then at the age of four, I noticed that some of his back teeth had turned black.

I learned that these problems were caused by a build up of tarter on his teeth. And what caused that? My failure to frequently brush his teeth. The same thing would happen to me if I didn't brushed my teeth for four years.

Plaque can build up on a dog's teeth just like it does with us humans. The best way to get rid of that plaque is to brush. If you neglect brushing as I did, then the plaque turns to tarter and tarter can not be removed by brushing. It requires a dental cleaning by a vet.

So, I took Hunter to the vet to get his dental cleaning. He came home with clean teeth and no longer had bad breath. At this point, I realized the importance of dog dental care. Now I brush Hunter's teeth every other day.

Here are a few reasons why it is important to brush your dog's teeth:

1. It helps to prevent the dreaded, stinky dog breath. Did you know that the most common cause of bad breath in dogs is tarter build up?

2. It will help you and your dog avoid costly, health issues. Neglecting your dog's teeth can lead to oral problems and other health issues some of which can be serious including periodontal disease and infection. In addition, while brushing does not eliminate the periodic need for a costly dental cleaning by a vet, it does slow the build up of plaque and helps to prevent oral disease.

3. Most importantly, your dog will be happier with healthy teeth!

When brushing your dog's teeth, make sure to use dental care products which are specifically designed for dogs. I use Petrodex Enzymatic Toothpaste and my dog really seems to like it. He actually tries to lick the tube when I take the cap off. And while he doesn't enjoy getting his teeth brushed, he does tolerate it.

If you are wondering... How in the world do I brush my dog's teeth? Click here for a great video to learn how.

Feb 29, Friendly Reminder: Don't Forget Your Dog's Annual Vet Check

I recently took my Basset Hound, Hunter, to the veterinarian for his annual physical examination. So I was thinking that now is a good time to remind all dog owners about the importance of an annual exam.

Even if your dog appears to be healthy, it's a good idea to get him in once per year or at an interval recommended by your vet. Older dogs or dogs with health problems may need to be seen more often.

Here are a few reasons why it's important:

1. Early detection and treatment. Veterinarians are trained to recognize the early signs of a potentially serious problem. Usually, the earlier a problem is caught and treated, the better the outcome.

2. Preventative care. A good vet will advise you on how to prevent common health problems and this in turn will help you avoid costly veterinarian bills in the future. He may talk about vaccinations, preventative medicines such as heartworm and flee / tick, nutrition, etc.

3. Last but not least… by being proactive you are helping your dog live a happy, healthy life so that he can be your best friend for many years to come.

What will the vet check? He'll examine your dog from head to toe… eyes, ears, nose, mouth, teeth, skin and coat, tail, abdomen, weight, etc. He may ask about any behavior changes, take blood for blood work (usually for older dogs), and do a test for intestinal parasites.

Of course, keep an eye on your dog throughout the year and contact your vet immediately if you notice anything concerning or have any questions.

As for Hunter...
He is ten years old now and thankfully, got a clean bill of health. He has a few lumps that were checked previously and they are just fatty tissue (nothing to be overly concerned about). But, one of them got a little bigger. So I asked the vet about this. She said that sometimes they do get bigger over time. But, they don't need to be removed unless they become bothersome to him. She liked that he still has a waist, i.e he's not getting fat as he ages (which is common with Basset Hounds).

Hunter doesn't like going to the vet. I don't blame him. I don't like going to the doctor either. But, he did enjoy the treats they gave him at the end. Unfortunately, my doctors never offer me chocolate chip cookies at the end of a visit... Oh well.

So go ahead and pencil in a reminder on your calendar, enter it into your iPhone, or send yourself an alert (whatever method you use). And if your dog is overdue, why not call right now to make an appointment?
