May 11, Basset Hound Feeding Tip

Dog bowls are available in many colors, materials, and styles. But, which kind is the best?

I highly recommend stainless steel dog bowls over plastic. Why? Well, here are some reasons...

1. They are durable. Stainless steel dog bowls last a long time, possibly for the life of your dog. They do not break when dropped (although the loud noise scares my dog as I have learned from experience) and they can not be chewed up like plastic bowls.

2. Easiest to clean and are dishwasher safe.

3. Does not absorb odors.

4. Does not stain like plastic.

5. Does not rust.

6. Resists scratches that can harbor bacteria. Therefore your dog will be less likely to acquire a bacterial disease.

7. Most sanitary. Stainless steel bowls do not have pores like plastic bowls where harmful bacteria can grow.

May 6, Tips for a Safe, Enjoyable Summer with Your Basset Hound

As spring turns to summer, you and your Basset Hound will be able to spend time outside enjoying the sunshine. But, it is important to remember that dogs can become dehydrated very quickly in the heat.

Here are some tips to keep your Basset Hound safe and healthy during the hot summer months...

1. Do not take long walks or over-exert on hot summer days. On very hot days, limit exercise to early morning or evening hours when the heat is less intense. Take a few short walks instead of one long walk.

2. Protect your dog's paws. The pavement (cement, asphalt, etc.) gets hot in the summer and it can burn your Basset Hound's paws. Also, dogs absorb and release heat through their feet. Remember to check the pavement.

3. Never leave your dog in the car (even for a few minutes). Leaving the car in the shade or cracking the window provides little relief. Temperatures inside a car can rise to unbearable levels even on a warm day and it can be deadly. If you are going somewhere that does not welcome dogs, then leave him home.

4. Always provide plenty of cool, fresh water. Keep your dog hydrated.

5. Be aware that when a dog becomes overheated or does not feel good, he stops drinking and this can quickly lead to dehydration. Keep an eye on your dog and make sure that he is drinking plenty of water.

6. Don't leave your dog unattended if you have a pool or are near a body of water. Basset Hounds can swim. But, they are not very good at it because they carry two-thirds of their weight in front and have short legs. Have fun in the pool while keeping a watchful eye on your Basset Hound.

7. Remember... if you are uncomfortably hot, then your dog is too. Get your dog into the shade or take him inside where it is cooler.

Finally, enjoy your summer!
