This is the place to be! Here you'll find the best Basset Hound information.
Well… at least that’s my opinion. I like to refer to this web site as “a friendly place to learn about and share the breed.”
But if you’re like me, you may want to supplement the Basset Hound information that you find online with a really good book or two.

Before I got my first Basset Hound back in 2002, I knew little about this dog breed. In an effort to learn as much as I could, I searched the web, talked to owners, and asked the experts.
Over the years, I also ordered a bunch of books. Some were general dog books and others were breed specific. This was back before we all started downloading books and reading them on a Kindle app.
I really enjoyed reading those books, comparing information, and of course looking at all of the pictures. I learned a lot and the information helped me raise a happy, healthy, well-behaved Basset Hound.
Believe it or not... After all of these years, I still have all of those books sitting on a shelf in my house.
So, which Basset Hound books are the best?
Well, I guess that's a matter of opinion and here I'll share mine (of course).
From my Basset Hound book collection, I have two favorites…
By Joan Urban
One of the reasons I like this book so much is because the author owned, bred, and loved Basset Hounds for over 40 years. She has extensive experience with the breed which without a doubt gives her authority (in my opinion).
The book provides a wealth of information including history of the breed, characteristics, breed standard, selecting a dog, health and care, basic training, and the sport of purebred dogs. It also contains many, adorable Basset Hound photos - a few are quite hilarious.
I especially like the last chapter which is titled Behavior and Canine Communication. It provides interesting information about the human / animal bond and emphasizes the importance of early socialization. It also explains the pack orientation of dogs and dominance.
A reader can gain great insight and understanding of the Basset Hound breed by the depth of knowledge that Joan Urban shares in this book.
The next book with excellent Basset Hound information that I recommend is...
By Bobbye Land
The author of this book loves animals and has a broad range of experience that includes 25 years breeding purebred dogs, 7 years as a veterinary assistant, and managing her own pet grooming shop.
The book covers history of the breed, characteristics, preparing for your dog, health and care, as well as basic and advanced training. It has lots of Basset Hound photographs, including full-page photos at the start of each chapter.
I like this book because it is both clear and informative with a clean format. Many pages have sidebars highlighting useful tips pertaining to the topic being covered. I also enjoy the full page Basset Hound photographs.
In my opinion, both of these books are excellent.
If you own a Basset Hound or are a potential owner and are seeking quality Basset Hound information, then I highly recommend either of these two books.
Both are available at amazon.com. While I really like having the hardcover version of these books, the second one is available on Kindle.
