Books with the Best Basset Hound Information

Are you interested in learning all about Basset Hounds? As you can see, there are many books from which to choose...

So, which Basset Hound books are the best? Well, I guess that's a matter of opinion and here I'll share mine.

But first, here's a little background information about me...

I own a Basset Hound named Hunter. He joined my family in February 2002 at the age of 4 months. Since then, in an effort to learn as much as I can about dogs and the Basset Hound breed, I've collected a number of books. Some are general dog books and others are breed specific.

From my Basset Hound book collection, I have two favorites. Both are hardcover. The first is...

A New Owner's Guide to Basset Hounds

By Joan Urban : (2002)

One of the reasons I like this book so much is because the author has owned, bred, and loved Basset Hounds for over 40 years. She has extensive experience with the breed which without a doubt gives her authority (in my opinion).

The book provides a wealth of information including history of the breed, characteristics, breed standard, selecting a dog, health and care, basic training, and the sport of purebred dogs. It also contains many, adorable Basset Hound photos - a few are quite hilarious.

I especially like the last chapter which is titled Behavior and Canine Communication. It provides interesting information about the human / animal bond and emphasizes the importance of early socialization. It also explains the pack orientation of dogs and dominance.

A reader can gain great insight and understanding of the Basset Hound breed by the depth of knowledge that Joan Urban shares in this book.

Update Oct. 2008: An interesting article about Joan Urban. She gets ready to show 9 of her hounds at the Basset Hound Club of America National Dog Show. Be sure to view the slide show.

The next book with excellent Basset Hound information that I recommend is...

The Basset Hound (Terra Nova Series)

By Bobbye Land : (2006)

The author of this book loves animals and has a broad range of experience that includes 25 years breeding purebred dogs, 7 years as a veterinary assistant, and managing her own pet grooming shop.

The book covers history of the breed, characteristics, preparing for your dog, health and care, as well as basic and advanced training. It has lots of Basset Hound photographs, including full-page photos at the start of each chapter.

A DVD that comes with the book covers general dog care and training. Unfortunately, it's not Basset Hound specific. Nevertheless, the DVD is educational. Especially for a first time dog owner. Topics include bringing your puppy home, in-home training, teaching the basics, and advice from the vet.

I like this book because it is both clear and informative with a clean format. Many pages have sidebars highlighting useful tips pertaining to the topic being covered. I also enjoy the full page Basset Hound photographs.

Final thoughts...

In my opinion, both of these books are excellent.

If you own a Basset Hound or are a potential owner and are seeking quality Basset Hound information to help you raise a happy, healthy, and well-behaved dog, then I highly recommend either of these two books.

Both of these books are available at amazon.com. If you'd like to purchase or need more information, click the book image or title below to go directly to amazon's product page.
