Flash LOVES our iguana. he would crawl next to her and act innocent. hoping to be buddies. she loves him too tho =-) she even comfortable enough to sleep next to him.

Every Basset Hound has their own antics and every Basset Hound shares some of the same! I wanted to find out how much alike Basset Hounds can be. We all know our Bassets are one of a kind! But are they? I see some funny videos and stories of some of the same things my Basset does!

My Basset, Flash, is all about being a thief. I know all Bassets follow their stomachs and are smart about it. But he develops and adapts "plans" for stealing things and knows which will work on who.

His favorite game is stealing bones from the other dogs or enticing them to try to take his. ( For some reason he thinks it's the greatest thing if the other dogs try to get his rawhide.) It started with bringing in a new toy and making it look interesting till the other dogs couldn't stand it anymore, and then stealing their rawhide. Basic rawhide robbery 101. When he got older he started to change his tactics for each dog. He knew that the Shih Tzu wouldn't fall for the enticing toy trick, so for him he would randomly run to the window barking like someone was at the door. As soon as the Shih Tzu would check it out, he would run as fast as he could and steal the bone. (He would make it dramatic growling and everything even though the Shih Tzu was no where nearby anymore.)

When that stopped working he would cry at the door wanting to go outside. And the Shih Tzu would decide that going outside would be great. The Shih Tzu wised up a little on Flash. He would take the bone with him to the door. Wait for Flash to get outside. Set it down and go out. However Flash would wait on the porch and as soon as the Shih Tzu was passed, him he would run back inside and take off with the bone. Funny stuff.

He has a different tactic for our Husky. The Husky doesn't have an interest in a lot of things. But he is very jealous over attention. So all Flash does to him is he will jump in our lap and get a good belly rub. And our husky will be quick to want to join in. And then flash takes the bone. Good stuff.

For some reason and I don't know WHY but he seems to LIKE to get into conflicts over bones.

He will set his raw hides in high traffic areas. Or pretend like he isn't paying attention so the other dogs try to take his, and he will quick snatch it up and growl and act all upset. He will also push a rawhide towards the other dog slowly with his nose till they try to grab it. He doesn't just do this with dogs. He does it with the completely uninterested cats. It cracks me up watching him. He does this in door ways or hallways. Some place that the other dogs can't avoid walking through.

This is his life. He lives for guarding his raw hides and stealing others. He never gets aggressive though. It's always just playing for him. But he will do this for hours everyday. It is his favorite thing to do.

On top of stealing bones. I had 2 whole roasted chickens on my dining room table, way out of reach of Flash. Unfortunately they were on a rag cause the dish was hot. I went to take a shower and my beloved Basset Hound had pulled the rag till the dish was close enough to knock off the table. Good stuff.

This is only scratching the surface! Basset Hounds are sooooo amusing. I love them.

sumos soccer style
by: Anonymous

me and sumo would play soccer with a tennis ball in the living room and dinning room. I would kick it and he would kick it back he would even get his head down so you couldn't see the ball because of his ears would hide it. he would bring the ball up the floor petty fast than kick to one side or the other.A soccer playing basset he would be so competitive too. I would get laughing so hard you would have to let him win.I miss him every day

Bassets are clowns.

I have an 8 yr old Basset Artesian Normand. My boyfriend got her for me for my birthday. We rescued her from the Dumb Friends League.
For some reason, when I give her Kibbles and Bits dog food, she likes to take mouthfuls of her food from the kitchen and make little piles of it all over the house. And she even sorts them out by color and shape.
I'm not sure what she's doing with them, I never see her eat them.

Flash again!
by: Laurie

Flash had me laughing so hard the other day! i was watching tv in another room and I heard flash crying. i ignored him cause he cries about EVERYTHING lately. he cries if he cant get in the garbage or up into the cats room. like im going to let him go be naughty just cause he is crying and giving me "the look". so after 5 min he was still crying so i went to check on him and he is stuck in a corner with his big dog food bag on his head. apparently he walked all over till he got stuck. so i got my camera and snapped a picture and took a video. all the while he is wagging his tail and moaning mornfully cause he knew i was laughing at him. good stuff! he usually gets them off his head but this one was really on there. after a few min of laughing at him i took it off. and what does he do! tries to stick his nose right back in the bag to smell the food!

Yes, my Basset Hound trips alot...
by: Virginia from just-basset-hounds

It's really funny to watch. It usually happens when he runs really fast (outside) and tries to jump up on to a low curb. He'll get going as fast as he can and then tries to jump up. Sometimes he does it fine. But other times, it seems like he doesn't time it right and he misses and falls over.

Do your Basset Hounds.....
by: Angie

Trip over their feet - I think they actually stand on their long ears and thats why they trip and fall. When our basset Basil was a puppy I thought that there was something wrong with him because he kept falling over when he walked. Until I realised that he was standing on his ears when he walked and then would fall over 'cause he'd lost his balance.
I can relate to all your comments Laurie. They are a special breed aren't they!

Do your basset hounds...

1) trip over their feet?

flash ALWAYS trips when he is running. besides having short legs to slow him down ,he cant seem to manage his giant paws, he face plants everytime he gets running. its so funny.

2) Have a hard time managing chewys?

My other dogs hold their chewys between their paws and chew them. Flash has such short legs he cant do this. So alot of times he rolls on his back and holds the chewy with his paws and positions it so gravity helps it stay.

3) Get bags and other items stuck on their heads?

Flash has this problem. he will get into something. usually paper bags , and with his short legs he cant get them off his head. so he usually starts to cry. and instead of sympathy he gets laughed at. poor Flash

4) Fall out of bed?

All bassets sleep soundly! Flash falls out of bed sometimes. He rolled off the bed one night and i heard him hit the floor. so naturally i wake up worried he hurt himself. he lifted his head about an inch, grunted and continued to sleep.

5) jump poorly?
this is a given right? with their short legs? this is one of things that really crack me up about bassets. sometimes i think their bodies are so long they cant get their back and their front legs working together 100% of the time. Flash will go to jump on the couch and he will jump with his front legs and his butt wont go anywhere. or he will jump and doesnt time the back and front leg jumps right and he doesnt get anywhere. Everytime he gets on the couch it has to be thought out. and most of the time he barely makes it on.

Bassets are clowns
by: Angie

Hi there, you have quite a pack!
My 2 Bassets (Basil & Shannon) are very similar to what you have described and they are so funny. Their expressions are price-less and they are so clever. I always tell my friends, don't let their funny faces fool you cause they are very clever and very canniving. Mine love to bark and intimidate the smaller dogs - especially for toys and treats and at meal times too.
Sometimes it ends up being a big game and all 5 dogs end up running through the garden like they're playing "tag". Of course Basil ends up having all the other dogs pile on top of him when they finally catch him and they all bark loudly at one another like they're laughing. You can see on their expressions that they're having so much fun at that specific moment.

Bassets are clowns
by: Angie

Hi there, it seems as though you have quite a pack! I have 2 bassets (Basil & Shannon) and then 3 Dashchunds (Simone; Jellybean and Odie). Your basset is very playful just like my Basil & Shannon. Basil has a fetish for Socks (sounds weird - but we actually buy him those long ones like soccer/football socks and tie them in knots - he loves to play tug of war and chew the knots!). He normally drops the socks in the swimming pool so they're soaking wet and then will run up to any of the other dogs and try to entice them to take away his sock (or any other toy he's chewing). On the raw hide bones issue, I can totally relate! Basil will bark at the other dogs whilst they are chewing theirs to intimidate them into giving theirs up.......although his raw hide bone is right next to him. I reckon he thinks it tastes better if its someone elses? Shannon is mostly lazy but every now and then she has a burst of energy and then chases Basil and their other pals around the house or garden like its happy hour or something. She'll bark loudly at them so that they know that she's the boss of their pack. Its always so funny to watch them because they are such clowns.

Funny...
by: Virginia from just-basset-hounds

Flash sounds like he's deviously playful. It's great that he has a bunch of pals to play with. Great photo! I can see it in his eyes.

My Basset, Hunter, likes to try to grab toys before I can. When playing with him, I sit on the floor and try to keep his stuffed toy from him. He'll chase it around me and all over and try to grab it. Then when I throw it, he runs after it to get it.

Sometimes I tell him to sit and put the toy in between both of us. Then I shout out 'OK' and we both try to get to the toy first and grab it. He loves it. When he's sitting there, I can tell that he's thinking about how to get to it before I do. It's really funny.

When I give him a chew toy, he doesn't chew it. Instead, he plays with it. Throwing it up in the air, barking at it. He then tries to hide it. If he's outside, he'll bury it. If he's inside, he tries to bury it in the corner of a room. He scratches the carpet as though he's digging and then pushes it in the corner with his nose. He has to get it just right. I think he thinks that no one can see it - like it's really hidden.

Thanks for contributing! I enjoyed reading about Flash. Sounds like he's quite a character.
