Basset Hound Antics

Flash LOVES our iguana. he would crawl next to her and act innocent. hoping to be buddies. she loves him too tho =-) she even comfortable enough to sleep next to him.
My Basset, Flash, is all about being a thief. I know all Bassets follow their stomachs and are smart about it. But he develops and adapts "plans" for stealing things and knows which will work on who.
His favorite game is stealing bones from the other dogs or enticing them to try to take his. ( For some reason he thinks it's the greatest thing if the other dogs try to get his rawhide.) It started with bringing in a new toy and making it look interesting till the other dogs couldn't stand it anymore, and then stealing their rawhide. Basic rawhide robbery 101. When he got older he started to change his tactics for each dog. He knew that the Shih Tzu wouldn't fall for the enticing toy trick, so for him he would randomly run to the window barking like someone was at the door. As soon as the Shih Tzu would check it out, he would run as fast as he could and steal the bone. (He would make it dramatic growling and everything even though the Shih Tzu was no where nearby anymore.)
When that stopped working he would cry at the door wanting to go outside. And the Shih Tzu would decide that going outside would be great. The Shih Tzu wised up a little on Flash. He would take the bone with him to the door. Wait for Flash to get outside. Set it down and go out. However Flash would wait on the porch and as soon as the Shih Tzu was passed, him he would run back inside and take off with the bone. Funny stuff.
He has a different tactic for our Husky. The Husky doesn't have an interest in a lot of things. But he is very jealous over attention. So all Flash does to him is he will jump in our lap and get a good belly rub. And our husky will be quick to want to join in. And then flash takes the bone. Good stuff.
For some reason and I don't know WHY but he seems to LIKE to get into conflicts over bones.
He will set his raw hides in high traffic areas. Or pretend like he isn't paying attention so the other dogs try to take his, and he will quick snatch it up and growl and act all upset. He will also push a rawhide towards the other dog slowly with his nose till they try to grab it. He doesn't just do this with dogs. He does it with the completely uninterested cats. It cracks me up watching him. He does this in door ways or hallways. Some place that the other dogs can't avoid walking through.
This is his life. He lives for guarding his raw hides and stealing others. He never gets aggressive though. It's always just playing for him. But he will do this for hours everyday. It is his favorite thing to do.
On top of stealing bones. I had 2 whole roasted chickens on my dining room table, way out of reach of Flash. Unfortunately they were on a rag cause the dish was hot. I went to take a shower and my beloved Basset Hound had pulled the rag till the dish was close enough to knock off the table. Good stuff.
This is only scratching the surface! Basset Hounds are sooooo amusing. I love them.
