12 Year Old Basset Hound Survives Attack by a 7 Foot Alligator

by Virginia

May 2010. While alligator attacks against dogs are almost always fatal, Sophie, a 12 year old Basset Hound, managed to survive one.

She was out on a walk when she was grabbed by an alligator that launched out of a lake and grabbed her. Apparently, she was grabbed and released by the "gater" several times and at one point was pulled under water.

Somehow she managed to get away and is now recovering at home after spending five days in intensive care.

Yes - Very Lucky!

This happened in Florida (not to me). From reading the story, it sounds like they were caught totally off guard. The news story says that the "gater" launched out of the water and grabbed Sophie.

Thanks for posting your story. What a horrible experience. Oh man. It's one of my biggest fears. I live in the south with lagoons everywhere. My eyes are always peeled when we walk by one. Did you see any signs of the alligator before hand?
